Leader in Me is a new program that Cloverdale Community School Corporation (CCSC) has adopted for a 4 year period, starting with the current 2021-2022 school year. Leader in Me is organized by FranklinCovey Education. The program is meant to develop leadership skills, strengthen and increase school spirit and culture, and enhance academics. It is meant to create people who can make meaningful contributions; people who are both independent and interdependent; people who can lead their own lives and work well with others; people who can change “I can’t do this” into “I CAN do this!”

This fall semester students have been working on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. These include: Be Proactive; Begin With the End in Mind; Put First Things First; Think Win-Win; Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood; Synergize; Sharpen the Saw. Our school day has a built-in 30 minute period where students work on Leader in Me. So far this year, it has been led by teachers, but we will soon be including the students more, and eventually, it will all be run by students.

This is a corporation-wide program, meaning kids in elementary, middle, and high school will be learning about it. The focus is not just on the students, however. The program is also meant for teachers to help shape the way they run their classrooms and interact with students. Teachers attend training sessions that focus on academics, leadership, and school culture.

I am excited about this program and what it will bring to CCSC. I have already learned a lot from it and I’ve heard similar outcomes for fellow students; I hope this trend continues into the years to come.
